Volkswagen Recalls Nearly 90,000 Q5 Models
Volkswagen Recalls Nearly 90,000 Q5 Models Over Fire Risk — What California Drivers Need to Know
Volkswagen is recalling nearly 90,000 Q5 Quattro and Q5 Sportback Quattro SUVs from the 2022 to 2024 model years after discovering a defect that could lead to engine oil leaks and potential vehicle fires.
If you own or lease one of these vehicles in California, this issue isn’t just concerning — it may make your car eligible for protection under the California Lemon Law.
What’s the Problem?
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the cylinder head cover screws in these vehicles may have been improperly tightened during manufacturing.
As a result, the screws can loosen over time, allowing engine oil to leak — which significantly increases the risk of fire.
While Volkswagen hasn’t confirmed any injuries or accidents as of yet, the potential for serious harm is very real, especially if the leak occurs near hot engine components.
Recalled Volkswagen Models:
This recall affects 89,417 vehicles, specifically:
2022–2024 Audi Q5 Quattro
2022–2024 Audi Q5 Sportback Quattro
If you own or lease one of these vehicles, Volkswagen recommends having your vehicle inspected and serviced as soon as possible.
What Will Volkswagen Do?
Volkswagen dealers will inspect and re-torque the cylinder head cover screws, or replace them if necessary, at no cost to the owner. Recall notifications are expected to be mailed out shortly.
But for many California drivers, this may not be enough — especially if you’ve already dealt with engine oil smells, leaks, warning lights, or unexpected repair bills.
How the California Lemon Law Protects You
Under the California Lemon Law (Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act), you may be entitled to a vehicle replacement or a full refund if your car has:
A defect affecting its use, safety, or value
Needed multiple repairs under warranty for the same issue
Spent extended time in the shop
Proven to be unreliable or unsafe
Even if your vehicle is under recall, you may still qualify for a Lemon Law claim if you’ve had repeated issues or repair attempts related to engine oil leaks or other defects.
