Ford Recalls Over 270,000 SUVs for Potential Brake Failure

Ford Recalls Over 270,000 SUVs for Potential Brake Failure — What It Means for California Drivers

Published by Naderi Law Group – California Lemon Law Attorneys

In a major safety development, Ford is recalling nearly 274,000 of its 2022–2024 Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs across the United States due to a serious brake defect that could result in loss of braking power while driving.

For California drivers, this issue isn’t just a recall notice — it could be a sign that your SUV qualifies as a “lemon” under California law, entitling you to a refund, vehicle replacement, or cash compensation.

What’s the Issue?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the front brake lines in these vehicles may have been improperly installed, putting them in direct contact with the engine’s air cleaner outlet pipe.

This contact can wear through the brake lines, causing:

  • Brake fluid leaks

  • Reduced braking power

  • Total brake failure in worst-case scenarios

As of mid-April, Ford had already received 45 warranty claims involving leaking front brake lines, though no crashes or injuries have been reported — yet.

Recalled Vehicle Models

This recall includes:

  • 2022–2024 Ford Expedition (approx. 223,315 units)

  • 2022–2024 Lincoln Navigator (approx. 50,474 units)

While Ford estimates that only about 1% of vehicles may have this defect, any loss of brake function poses a critical safety risk — especially at highway speeds or in high-traffic areas like Los Angeles, San Francisco, or San Diego.

What Is Ford Doing?

Ford will notify affected owners and dealers will inspect the brake lines. If necessary, they will repair or replace the brake components free of charge.

But if your SUV has already experienced braking issues, needed multiple repairs, or spent excessive time at the dealership, you may have a strong Lemon Law case.

California Lemon Law Might Apply to Your SUV

Under the California Lemon Law (Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act), you may be entitled to relief if:

  • Your vehicle has been in the shop repeatedly for the same issue (brakes, in this case)

  • The defect affects the vehicle’s safety, use, or value

  • The vehicle has spent 30+ days at the dealership

  • The problems occurred under the manufacturer’s warranty

Even if your SUV is “fixed” under the recall, you may still be eligible for a buyback or compensation if the braking issue caused repeated problems.

What Should You Do If You Own One of These SUVs?

If you drive a 2022–2024 Ford Expedition or Lincoln Navigator and have experienced brake issues, take these steps:

  1. Document all service and repair visits

  2. Check your VIN on the NHTSA website to see if your vehicle is affected

  3. Contact a California Lemon Law attorney to explore your legal options
