Ford Recalls Over 220,000 F-150 Pickups Over Fuel Tank Detachment Risk

Ford Motor Company has issued a safety recall affecting 223,472 F-150 pickup trucks from model years 2023 through 2027 due to improperly secured fuel tanks.

The Defect

According to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA Campaign ID: 26V578, Ford Reference: 26S69), the front fuel tank strap’s T-slots may not have been correctly seated into the vehicle’s frame rail during assembly. Ford reported that automated camera verification systems at assembly plants were not in continuous operation during portions of the production window.

Safety Hazards

An improperly seated strap can cause the fuel tank to loosen and potentially detach while the vehicle is in motion. This condition presents several immediate safety risks:

• Fuel leaks that heighten fire hazards
• Sudden engine stalling from loss of fuel flow
• Roadway hazards for following traffic if the tank detaches from the chassis

There are no dashboard warning lights or prior indicators to alert drivers to an unsecured strap.

Affected Vehicles

• Models: Select 2023–2027 Ford F-150 trucks manufactured between January 4, 2023, and August 27, 2026.
• Scope: Primarily focused on newer inventory and vehicles with short service intervals, where the assembly defect is most likely to present.

Remedy and Next Steps

Ford and Lincoln dealerships will inspect the fuel tank straps and perform any necessary strap replacements free of charge. Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed between September 21 and September 28, 2026. Owners can verify whether their truck is affected by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA recall lookup tool or by contacting Ford customer service at (866) 436-7332.
