GM 6.2L V8 Engine Litigation

the GM 6.2L V8 Engine Litigation

A recent class-action lawsuit has brought significant attention to General Motors’ 6.2-liter V8 engine (L87), found in many high-end trucks and SUVs from the 2019–2024 model years. The litigation focuses on alleged mechanical defects that may lead to premature engine failure.

The Alleged Defect

The lawsuit claims that certain 6.2L engines were manufactured with defective main bearings. When these bearings fail, it can lead to a "spun bearing" scenario, resulting in:

  • Internal Engine Damage: Potential damage to the crankshaft and connecting rods.

  • Total Engine Seizure: The engine may stop functioning entirely, sometimes while the vehicle is in motion.

  • Metal Contamination: Debris from failing bearings circulating through the oil system, damaging other internal components.

Affected Models

The issues are primarily reported in GM’s full-size lineup, including:

  • Chevrolet: Silverado, Tahoe, and Suburban.

  • GMC: Sierra and Yukon/Yukon XL.

  • Cadillac: Escalade and Escalade ESV.

The Current Status of Repairs

While GM has acknowledged some of these concerns through technical service bulletins and a specific recall, the lawsuit suggests that current remedies—such as changing oil viscosity requirements or replacing the engine with an identical unit—may not fully address the underlying manufacturing flaw. Owners have expressed concern that even "repaired" vehicles may remain susceptible to the same issues over time.

Legal Options for Owners

If your GM vehicle has experienced engine knocking, stalling, or has required multiple repairs for internal engine components, it may qualify as a "Lemon" under California law. The law is designed to protect consumers from being stuck with unreliable vehicles. Class Action is not normally where consumers want to be. Opting out usually the best course.
